Automatic drip machines rarely offer temperature control and they unfortunately mostly operate at or near boiling which over extracts and yields a bitter tasting cup*. With the AeroPress you are not locked into a preset temperature which may be too hot or too cool — you can heat water to your desired temperature.

Automatic drip machines cannot produce espresso style coffee and therefore the drinks that can be made with it. The AeroPress can produce regular American style coffee or an espresso style concentrate which can be used like espresso in espresso based drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos.

* Some automatic drip machines offer temperature control and a drip system that promotes a more even extraction from the grounds. Despite these improvements, however, they are still dependent on gravity and therefore brew too slowly — and they are expensive.

Grind is critical in espresso machines and most home grinders cannot produce a grind fine or uniform enough to make a good tasting shot. While a fine-drip or espresso grind is best for the AeroPress, the AeroPress is very forgiving and can be used with a wide range of grinds.

When humidity levels change, grind must often be adjusted for espresso machines. Changes in humidity do not affect the AeroPress coffee maker.

Espresso machines depend on skillful tamping of grounds to pull a good shot. There is no tamping required for the AeroPress.

Home espresso machines require regular disassembly for cleaning and descaling with caustic chemicals. The AeroPress is essentially self cleaning making it incredibly low maintenance; a quick rinse is all that’s required to clean it.
